The Adventure Day Camp for 2024 is going to be packed full of nature based and adventure programming. We will be spending the summer exploring the local woods, ponds, streams, mountains, lakes, and fields that surround Thornton, New Hampshire. While exploring, campers will learn about the different animals, insects, birds, plants/trees, and habitats that make up this region. How we will explore is through hiking, swimming, arts/crafts, games, and taking field trips to a few outdoor museums and natural attractions. The camp is six weeks long and divided into three sessions. While each session has a theme, all weeks will include hiking, swimming, arts/crafts, games, and field trips. We will use the theme to help guide our exploration! New for 2024 this camp will be for students up to fifth grade. The campers spend their days all together as a camp, as well as smaller groups of similar grade levels.

This year, due to the construction scheduled to take place at the Thornton Central School, we will be running our camps out of the Adapt Basecamp. Basecamp is located at 72 Beebe River Road in Campton. This space is the hub of Adapt programming throughout the year. It is home to two hand built yurts, an indoor bouldering wall, indoor space for rainy day games, and fields and woods for exploring. With the location change, we needed to make some adjustments to our camp enrollment. This year we will be limited to a smaller number of campers total per session. The camp will be open to students who are entering kindergarten, through students entering fifth grade. Each day campers will be traveling off property to visit a local attraction. This will include hiking, swimming, field trips, and more! Campers will be assigned a travel group, which will include campers of their age group and two trained staff members. Some days we will travel to the same location, and other days the groups will set off on their own adventures!

Madeline

Summer Camp Director

Growing up in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire, Madeline holds a deep appreciation for the woods, water, and mountains that surround her home. Madeline holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science with a focus in Sustainable Agriculture from Vermont State University. Following graduation Madeline spent a year at NorthWoods Stewardship Center where she led outdoor adventure trips and delivered environmental education programs to students all across northern Vermont. It is during her time at NorthWoods, teaching kids about being stewards of our natural environment, which sparked her interest in being an educator. Moving back to the White Mountains Madeline began working at Mountain Village Charter School, a public nature-based Montessori school. For five years Madeline taught students in first through third grades in all subject areas. Using her knowledge of the natural world Madeline enjoyed teaching students in the outdoor classroom lessons of scientific observation, tree identification and animal tracking. When Madeline is not in the classroom she is often walking the banks of a river in search of wild trout, sliding on snow through the woods on her skis, or spending time with her fiancè Mackenzie and their dog Fern.

Emily

Emily is a current graduate student at Plymouth State University for School Counseling. This will be Emily's second year working as a paraeducator at Thornton Central School and for the ADAPT program. Emily has recently begun pursuing a hobby in nature photography and archery. This year, Emily is looking forward to supporting students' creativity, social-emotional learning, and need for exploration through activities and games.
