After School Program Facilitator’s Duties and Responsibilities:

Facilitators must perform various tasks to make sure that the daily operations of our after school program runs smoothly and that all children are safe and engaged. This could include organizing and leading group games, art projects, hiking, fort building, free play, and a number of other activities.

Create and Supervise Activities

Setting up the daily activities for children, typically aged 5-10, in after school settings is the main responsibility of an after school program facilitator. These facilitators ensure that activities are age-appropriate for each group and that each child is adequately challenged and enjoying the activity. Facilitators also supervise the children during these activities and instruct them on how to engage in each activity.

Ensure Safety of Attendees

The safety of children attending our after school program is also a main duty of a Facilitator. Teaching children about emergency plans, emphasizing safety during activity participation and going over such things as fire drills are all conducted by a Facilitator. When other ASP staff are helping a student with first aid or behavior management, you are responsible for keeping an eye and ear on the other students in the program. If needed, bring all other participants indoors to ensure their safety. This would be protocol if another student is severely physically injured, another student is making it unsafe for other participants, or there are any elements to the space making it unsafe for the participants.

Communicate with Peers and Parents

Facilitators work closely with the program Director to ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to and to report any inappropriate behaviors from children or staff personnel. Facilitators also communicate with parents, if needed, to report any problems or to simply keep them updated about their child’s daily progress and participation.

Facilitators Skills

Strong communication skills, both with children and adults, are essential for those seeking to become an after school program facilitator. They should be physically fit in order to participate in activities and should enjoy working outdoors. Facilitators should have organizational and decision-making skills and have the ability to work both independently and in teams. Along with the skills listed above we look for the following skills below when hiring.

Core skills:

● Organizing various activities

● Possessing skills in outdoor education, elementary education, and mindfulness.

● Communicating with children from grades K-4

● Coordinating activities into a daily schedule
